“No one ever thinks they will encounter a life changing event like West Nile Virus.

An ER visit would land Steve in the ICU almost immediately. Steve stayed in the ICU for 10 days fighting this mysterious illness along with contracting Covid, pneumonia, a DVT and kidney failure.

We would learn that the virus had infected his brain stem, causing encephalitis, which would result in an almost total inability to do anything for himself. Our lives changed dramatically, and we needed help at home to continue his rehabilitation. Our insurance was not able to help with Home Health and we began to consider privately paying for Physical Therapy at home. Feeling very defeated and overwhelmed, Dr. Smart stepped in and, in our minds, saved the day. He told us about the Calaveras Wellness Foundation, and how they could cover the cost of Steve’s Therapy. Our hearts were full of so many emotions. We could not believe it! Before we knew it Home Health was ordered, and Steve’s visits began.

Steve and his therapist Allison would work together 2 times a week for the next 7 months. He was relearning how to sit up and stand on his own. Every day would bring a new milestone as his muscles became stronger. Every day was also cherished as we knew he could have easily lost this battle. A day of celebration was upon us when Steve would graduate from Home Health on May 30, 2024.

To say that Calaveras Wellness Foundation has saved his life, to us, is an understatement! He would not be where he is today, walking and driving and being independent at home without them.

Thank you seems like such a minute word and our gratitude could wrap the universe a thousand times over!”
